Indus Valley Civilization and Aryan Civilization

Looking at both of their history is rather interesting.

Indus Valley Civilization

So let's start with the Indus Valley Civilization. It was a Bronze Age that existed in the South Asia from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE. It was located in the Indus River of eastern Pakistan and northwest India. We should ask that what is it well known for? They were most known for their urban planning, they excelled at construction making, water supply system and drainage system. They had made the famous building called the 'Great Bath' in which people used it for taking dips on important occasions.

Settlement of the Indus Valley Civilization

It was settled in the mountains of modern-day Pakistan and it flowed into the Arabian Sea through the south. Their land was very fertile, meaning that the soil was fresh and people would grow crops on the land. It made the agriculture easier by making the livestock available and giving them clean crops for survival.

Other than that they had a measurement system called 'seal'. This seal would usually be in a small, flat, square-like shape that depicted animals. These animals could be a tiger or a elephant. The seals looked similar with the Sumerians, meaning that they had traded with the Indus people before.

End of Indus Valley Civilization

The people living in the Indus Valley Civilization decreased in population due to the change in river course and heavy monsoon rains and because of this, loss of agriculture happened. Since then, they did not come back a few thousand years later.

Aryan Civilization

The word 'Arya' means 'noble of birth and race'. They consisted of a highly organized group that took over the Indus Valley Civilization. These people called themselves 'Arya', a term that had something to do with their Indo-European language and they came around 1500 to 1000 BCE. They fought with the Dasas which were dark-skinned individuals from India but they defeated them later on. They had four books of Vedas called Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda.

Settlement of the Aryan Civilization

The Aryans decided to settle in the Indian subcontinent and ancient Iran. The historians described Aryans as being light-skinned people that conquered ancient India. After conquering India, they made the four main occupations called Brahmins (Priests), Kshatriyas (Warriors), Vaishyas (Craftsman, merchants etc.) and Shudras (Laborers). After the invention of the caste system, some changes were done on it and that no one was able to change its system.

The religion Hinduism was laid by the Aryans since they believed in many gods who controlled the weather and would have them rain, cultivation and harvests.

End of Aryan Civilization

The end of the Aryan Civilization might be because of the climate change, droughts, decline in trade with the Mesopotamia and no arrivals. Like the Indus, it did not come back for another thousand years. Instead, some scholars believe the Indo-Aryan Migration theory that the Harappan culture was taken over by the Aryans of the northwest India.
